Asher, Neal
In the far future, the Heliothane Dominion is triumphant in the solar system, after a bitter war with their Umbrathane progenitors. But some of the enemy have escaped into the past, intent on wreaking havoc across time. The worst of these is Cowl, an artificially forced advance in human evolution but one who is no longer human. Polly, desperate to obtain funds to support her habits, is unprepared for her involvement with Nandru Jurgens, a Taskforce soldier, and the killers pursuing him. Nor can resist the alien ‘tor’ which she feels impelled to attach to her arm. But she must learn fast, as she is dragged back through time, not least that to the denizens of some earlier eras, she is little more than a convenience food. Initially, the fragment of tor imbedded in Tack’s wrist sums up his value to the Heliothane – a point brought home to him, with bloody abruptness. But, as a vat-grown programmable killer, employed by U-gov, he is no stranger to violence. His long journey into the lethal world of the Heliothane is only beginning, the extent of his mission just becoming apparent. Meanwhile, hunting throughout time and the alternates, Cowl’s pet, the torbeast, grows vast and dangerous. And the beast continues to feed. Reissued with new cover art.

The Technician (Polity 04)
Asher, Neal
The Theocracy has been dead for twenty years, and the Polity rules on Masada. But the Tidy Squad consists of rebels who cannot accept the new order. Their hate for surviving theocrats is undiminished, and the iconic Jeremiah Tombs is at the top of their hit list. Escaping his sanatorium, Tombs is pushed into painful confrontation with reality he has avoided since the rebellion. His insanity has been left uncured, because the near mythical hooder called the Technician that attacked him all those years ago, did something to his mind even the AIs fail to understand. Tombs might possess information about the suicide of an entire alien race. The war drone Amistad, whose job it is to bring this information to light, recruits Lief Grant, an ex-rebel Commander, to protect Tombs, along with the black AI Penny Royal, who everyone thought was dead. The amphidapt Chanter, who has studied the bone sculptures the Technician makes with the remains of its prey, might be useful too. Meanwhile, in deep space, the mechanism the Atheter used to reduce themselves to animals, stirs from slumber and begins to power up its weapons. Reissued with new cover art.

The Best of Elizabeth Bear
Bear, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Bear has been one of the most distinctive voices in modern speculative fiction. Her debut novel, Hammered, won the Locus Award for Best First Novel in 2005, the same year she received the John W Campbell Award for Best New Writer. In the years since, she has produced an impressive array of standalone novels (Undertow) and multi-volume series (the Eternal Sky trilogy, the New Amsterdam series), along with a steady stream of stories and novellas, the best of which are gathered in this generous, absolutely necessary volume. The Best of Elizabeth Bear contains 27 stories and novellas – many, never before collected – that encompass an astonishing range of themes, settings, ideas, and emotions. The collection opens with ‘Covenant’, a tale of serial murder unlike any you have ever read, and closes with the extraordinary ‘Erase, Erase, Erase’. The latter is a surrealist tour de force in which the unnamed narrator, a former cult member, reflects on her life, her nebulous but guilty past, and her constantly diminishing sense of self. In between these bookends are more than two dozen carefully-crafted tales that never fail to resonate beyond the final page. ‘Tideline’, winner of both the Hugo and Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Awards, tells the surprisingly moving story of Chalcedony, a former ‘war machine’ determined to preserve the memories of her dead human companions. ‘Shoggoths in Bloom’, another Hugo winner, offers a fresh take on H P Lovecraft’s Mythos, setting the action in a pre-WWII world, marked by racism and virulent anti-Semitism. These are just a few of the complex pleasures contained in this singular collection. Each of the remaining stories is a fully-realised gem. Each one offers something new and unexpected. Whether you choose to read this book from end to end, or to parcel the stories out in a more leisurely way, The Best of Elizabeth Bear will provide you with endless hours of provocative, deeply intelligent entertainment. A pricey, limited, hardcover edition from Subterranean Press; which may go out of print on release.

Colfer, Eoin
Squib Moreau may be swamp-wild, but his intentions are (generally) good: he really wants to be a supportive son to his hard-working momma Elodie. But, sometimes, life gets in the way – like when Fake Daddy walked out on them leaving a ton of debt, or when crooked Constable Regence Hooke got to thinking pretty Elodie Moreau was just the gal for him… An apprenticeship with the local moonshine runner, servicing the bayou, looks like the only way to pay off the family debts and, maybe, get Squib and his momma a place in town – far from Constable Hooke’s unwanted courtship, and Fake Daddy’s reputation. Unfortunately for Squib, Hooke has his own eye on that very same stretch of bayou – and neither of them have taken into account the fire-breathing dragon, hiding out in the Louisiana swamp… For Squib Moreau, Regence Hooke and Vern, aka Lord Highfire of Highfire Eyrie, life is never going to be the same again. ‘A funny, offbeat, adult fantasy novel’ – Independent.

But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay. At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father’s godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortazar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father the emperor doesn’t guess. And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte’s authoritarian regime. The Quite Nice and Fairly Accurate Good Omens Script Book
Gaiman, Neil
Before he died, Terry Pratchett asked Neil Gaiman to make a television series of the internationally-beloved novel they wrote together, about the end of the world. What followed was almost… ineffable. Over six glorious episodes, Neil brought an angel, Aziraphale, and a demon, Crowley (the only things standing between us and the inevitable Armageddon) to life, in some of the most extraordinary television ever made. Here, you will find the scripts that Neil wrote, containing much that is new and revelatory and even several scenes throughout that never made the final cut. For the very first time, this edition collects all the missing bits – from a certain Other Four Horsemen to a little demonic shopping trip – and reveals the secrets of the show, which, by its very nature, is known to ask for the impossible. Step backstage, and see the magic, for yourself. This edition of The Quite Nice and Fairly Accurate Good Omens Script Book contains an introduction by Neil Gaiman about bringing Good Omens (PBK, $19.99) to the screen, and all cut scenes.

Gibson, William
Verity Jane, gifted app whisperer, takes a job as the beta tester for a new product: a digital assistant, accessed through a pair of ordinary-looking glasses. ‘Eunice’, the disarmingly human AI in the glasses, manifests a face, a fragmentary past, and a canny grasp of combat strategy. Realising that her cryptic new employers don’t, yet, know how powerful and valuable Eunice is, Verity instinctively decides that it’s best, they don’t. Meanwhile, a century ahead in London, in a different timeline entirely, Wilf Netherton works amid plutocrats and plunderers, survivors of the slow and steady apocalypse known as the jackpot. His boss, the enigmatic Ainsley Lowbeer, can look into alternate pasts and nudge their ultimate directions. Verity and Eunice are her current project. Wilf can see what Verity and Eunice can’t: their own version of the jackpot, just around the corner, and the roles they both may play in it. We may all wish that Gibson wrote faster… but it’s worth it, when he publishes something! Recommended.

A Brightness Long Ago
